Nhis Ghana Registration Guide, Login, Renewal Process

The National Health Insurance Scheme is a government-formed scheme in Ghana that has been operating since 2003. It was and still is intended to see all citizens receive quality healthcare at the lowest cost possible.

Below is a review of what the scheme involves and how to register.

All insurance products are meant to protect individuals from the effects that come with unexpected events. For instance, on taking motor insurance, you can be sure that you’ll receive compensation if an accident occurs. As such, you will not have to spend cash on motor repair.

The same rationale applies with Ghana’s Health Insurance, as citizens are required to make small contributions every once in a while, so that they do not have to worry about accumulating a lump sum to be admitted to a hospital.

Seeing that all citizens earn differently, the scheme is designed in a manner that allows members to pay premiums based on their financial soundness. To increase NHISs funds, a bill was passed into law to include a 2.5% levy on various services and goods, so that all citizens would contribute to the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Diseases covered by Ghana Health Insurance (NHIS) include:

  • Asthma.
  • Diabetes.
  • Hypertension.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Malaria.
  • Skin-related diseases

Health-related expenses that are not covered by the scheme include:

  • Chronic kidney diseases.
  • Dentures.
  • Orthopaedic aids.
  • Hearing aids.
  • Optical aids.

If interested in being an NHIS member, note that you’ll be interviewed, as a way to determine the category that you fall under. The two categories of members are:

  • A member of the exempt group.

Individuals under this group must provide proof of exemption during registration.

  • Pregnant women – every pregnant lady will have to present a note from their doctor or an antenatal card to prove het they’re expectant.
  • Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributor – one must be an active contributor based on the database presented to NHIS by SSNIT.
  • SSNIT pensioner – one must present their SSNIT number.

Other people who are exempt include, elderly people (aged 70 and above), people with mental health issues, and differently abled people, among others.

  • An annual premium paying member.

Anyone registered under this category will be required to pay premiums and annual processing fee for renewal.

Depending on the group you fall under, below is the process to register as an NHIS subscriber:

  1. Fill in the details below on the application form that will be provided: Mobile numbers, marital status, full legal names, age, physical address, and date of birth.
  2. After giving the correct details, the registration officer will request to take your fingerprints and passport–sized photograph.
  3. Choose your Preferred Primary Provider (PPP) – Your PPP is a health care provider that you can visit if you need medical attention. If your condition cannot be solved by the chosen provider, you can go to a capable one and still receive insurance benefits in case of an emergency. You can change your PPP if you move to another residence.
  4. The district office will provide a list of health facilities that allow NHIS so that you can choose one that’s closest to your location.
