How to check your NHIF (National Hospital Insurance Fund) status

Checking your NHIF status has been recently modified and updated making it easier for an individual to check their status in a quicker way. An individual will only require to a have a working mobile phone and also a smartphone to check their NHIF status. There are numerous ways available in which one can check their NHIF status namely;

  • Through an SMS
  • Through online
  • Through email account
Checking NHIF through an SMS

It is simply a simple step by step procedure which entails the following steps

  • Go to your SMS app and select start chat or start a new chat depending on your phone options
  • Type the number 211101 in the next step
  • Type ID space then write your ID number or simply your passport number if applicable
  • Select send
  • Your will get a reply message with your employer name, details and the month in which you paid your contribution last

Note This service only charges 10 KSHS.

Checking your NHIF status via online

In order for you to get to know your NHIF status online, it will require you to have the following credentials;

NHIF card numbers, valid email address, working mobile number and then follow the following step by step procedures;

  • Visit NHIF official website nhif.or.ke
  • Create a password which can always be reset
  • Log into your NHIF portal using the above log in credentials to check your NHIF status
  • A web page will be displayed for you containing full results outcome

Checking NHIF status through email address

The National Hospital Insurance Fund managerial department has not outlined the procedures in which one should check NHIF status via email.

What you do email [email protected] requesting for your NHIF status and a full NHIF statement will be sent to your email address.

How to pay NHIF via M-Pesa

To pay your NHIF via M-Pesa follow the following steps;

  • Go to M-Pesa menu on your sim toolkit
  • Select Lipa na M-Pesa
  • Select pay bill and enter the pay bill number 200222
  • Enter your account number ( your id number )
  • Enter the amount of money you would like to pay for your NHIF
  • Enter your pin and press ok
  • Confirm the transaction and press ok then wait for confirmation message from both M-Pesa and NHIF showing the payments you have made.
How to pay NHIF penalty

You can pay your NHIF penalty via M-Pesa by following the steps listed below

  • Go to M-Pesa menu on your sim toolkit
  • Select Lipa na M-Pesa
  • Go to pay bill option and input the pay bill number 200222
  • Enter your account number (your id number) and add letter y to it for example 34567889Y, the y character stands for penalty
  • Enter Ksh. 250 for each month that you have defaulted
  • Enter M-Pesa pin and confirm if the details are correct then select send
  • You will receive a confirmation message showing your payment
NHIF cover limits

There are two types of NHIF cover limits namely;

  1. Inpatient cover limit

inpatient cover are the cover limits which apply to patients who are receiving treatments while still residing in the hospital premises, i.e. the cover includes hospital bed patients and caters for the following types of treatment

  • maternal cover limits which includes both deliveries and caesarian section, prenatal ant antenatal services
  • reproductive health services which covers for family planning methods only for persons legally declared as couples
  • outside country surgeries which are not available in our Kenyan hospitals
  • rehabilitation for drug and substance abuse
  • all surgical procedure including kidney transplant
  • emergence evacuation services like for example road accident
  • cancer treatment which is at times both outpatient and inpatient
  • radiology, x-rays, CT scans and MRI
  • hospital bed charges
  • nursing care
  • diagnostic
  • laboratory test services
  • specialist consultation or visits
  • surgeon
  • dressing or medication prescribed by the physician for in-house use


  1. Outpatient cover limits

Outpatient services also called supa services are services which do not require hospitalization patient does not have to get treatment even during the entire overnight services they only come to get treatment or diagnosis and go away and details the following services

  • drug administration and dispensing
  • dental health care services
  • radiological examinations
  • nursing and mid wifey services
  • occupational therapy services
  • chemotherapy
  • radiotherapy
  • bathygraphy for cervical and prostate cancer

NB all these outpatient services go for up to 10 sessions per year

  • You can use your NHIF app to check
  • on your mobile phone USSD dial pad, dial *155#
  • you can also visit the NHIF offices to enquire about your NHIF outpatient services
  • NHIF also publishes an update article showing where the outpatients have currently been placed
  • you can also use self-service services by login into your NHIF portal via the following website
